Brentwood School fencers started the season in style with top performances at the British Selection Event in London.

In the Under 20 Women’s Foil, Maddy Gale started her campaign in great manner by finishing 11th out of over 55 athletes. Throughout the whole day, Maddy only lost one match, and that was to the later bronze medal winner in the last 16 elimination round.

Jack Elsworth competed in the Under 20 Men’s Foil event and with his last 64 result scored valuable ranking points.

Ian Ho was in superb form and claimed a bronze medal at the Under 17 Men’s Cadet British Selection Event only losing one match throughout the whole day - in the semi-finals - against the later winner. With this result, Ian Ho secured qualification for the first Sabre Under 17 International and will represent Great Britain on the 5th October in Godollo, Hungary.

Folayemi Akinyosoye, who finished a very decent 21st place, is the first one on the reserve list and will hopefully end up representing Great Britain as well in Godollo.

Mr Chris Galesloot, Master i/c Fencing, said:

All in all it was a very positive start from the Fencing Department and our athletes should be recommended for their continued training over the summer.
