Upper Sixth Form student Kajus Pakenas, who is studying IB Mandarin ab initio, put his linguistic skills to the test in the final round of the British Council’s Mandarin Speaking Competition in London.

Students from 43 UK secondary schools participated in the final round at the Victory Services Club in London. Kajus, who has only studied Chinese for just over a year, won 2nd place in the Beginner's Category.

Head of Mandarin, Mrs Jing Rodgers, said: “Kajus’ speech was impressive. He compared two metropolises, Shanghai and London, and also talked about the environmental issues within these two cities.

“His spontaneity and fluency is very rare at this level and he has done himself, and the School, proud. Many congratulations, Kajus!”
